Frequently Asked Questions

bullet

Q: Which kind of hunter does Custom Safaris serve best?  "Our ideal client" is the outdoor loving, budget driven first-timer-to-Africa who wants a total safari experience tailored to his specific, individual needs. He does not chase inches, but expects value for money and trophies of respectable sizes.

bullet

Q: What kinds of quarry is on offer?  Primarily the more affordable species plains game, hunted with rifle, handgun and bow, or black powder. The client's holiday can be spiced with options such as varmint and other outdoor activities like, wing shooting, bow-fishing, spear-fishing, scuba diving, 4x4 off-road excursions, boating, game viewing, hiking and general tourist attractions.

bullet

Q: How much will it cost me to hunt with Custom Safaris?  We do not have a standard price like the outfitters who operate from one ranch only. In stead, we shop around for the optimal offer to fit your specific needs in terms of animals species, topography and methods of hunting.  We then plan (together with you) on how we can jointly come up with the best quality at the lowest cost, i.e. maximum value for money, a "fit-for-purpose" holiday package, tailored to your individual needs. Once you have indicated to us roughly what you want, we send you a priced proposal. There are cheaper safari operators than us in South Africa and there are more expensive safari operators than us in South Africa.

bullet

Q: What about my safety and comfort while hunting with Custom Safaris?  The client's safety is never compromised in any way. We are very serious about safety. Comfort levels are adequate but not lavish, to curtail costs to the client. We give you comfort options to choose from.

Q: Who is my guide in the field and elsewhere?  Lochi Lochner owns the hunting outfit Custom Safaris. By law your field guide has to be a Nature Conservation certified PH. This will most likely be Lochi too, but if dates clash or he is not available for whatever reason, it could be another Nature Conservation certified PH. If you want to get to know Lochi much better, visit his other site also - African Econo Hunting - about the local hunting set-up in South Africa and Lochi's own hunting methods.

bullet

Q: What is the background to the founding of Custom Safaris?  Be sure to visit our first web site, the original "African Econo Hunting". This site is informative and tells you more about Lochi as a hunter himself, his predator calling methods and how the hunting set-up works in South Africa. It makes for fun reading.

bullet

Q: Are there financial and other risks in making a deal with a hunting outfitter in Africa? Yes, but you can reduce the risk by checking references with previous clients. If thing go wrong during and after your safari, you have recourse in the form of reporting unacceptable performance to PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa - if your outfitter is a member - see below), Nature Conservation and SAGRO (South African Game Farmers Association - see below). If your complaint is valid, it might terminate the outfitter' business.

bullet

Is it possible for me to bring my own rifles to SA for hunting purposes? Yes, but you have to comply with the latest firearms legislation.  The PHASA web site (see below) is a handy reference for the procedures to be followed.

bullet
